TL;DR

Two 2026 surveys of US operators point the same way. More than 70% of vending and micro market operators and 76% of office coffee operators added locations in 2025, and US convenience services revenue grew 18.3% to $40.04 billion. Staffing is not keeping pace: only 47% of office coffee operators added staff. Operators are responding by matching the format to the site. The question for 2026 is how many locations one team can serve well.

That gap sits at the center of a sharp read on the industry from Linda Becker, head of content at Automatic Merchandiser and VendingMarketWatch.com. In her October column, she puts the publication’s two annual surveys side by side and finds one market changing shape. (Source: Linda Becker, “Two surveys, one changing convenience services market,” Vending Market Watch, Oct 8, 2026)

Here is what her analysis shows, and what it means for an operator planning the next site.

Two Surveys, One Pattern

Vending Market Watch runs two industry surveys a year:

  • SOVI, the State of the Vending and Micro Markets Industry report, published in the June/July issue.
  • SOCI, the State of the Office Coffee Services Industry report, published in September.

Both surveys cover the US market, so every figure in this article describes US operators. Each survey draws on a separate pool of respondents. Becker’s point is that, read together, they describe the same larger trends.

Growth Now Comes From New Locations

Operators grew by adding sites in 2025:

  • More than 70% of SOVI respondents increased locations. (Source: Vending Market Watch, SOVI 2026, via Linda Becker)
  • 76% of SOCI respondents did the same. (Source: Vending Market Watch, SOCI 2026, via Linda Becker)
  • Locations outside offices generated 60% of office coffee respondents’ revenue mix. (Source: Vending Market Watch, SOCI 2026, via Linda Becker)

The new sites span manufacturing, education, healthcare, hospitality, residential and other nontraditional locations. (Source: Vending Market Watch, SOVI 2026, via Linda Becker)

The office is still a customer. It is no longer the whole map.

Revenue Is Up. So Are Costs.

SOVI estimated US convenience services revenue grew 18.3% to $40.04 billion. (Source: Vending Market Watch, SOVI 2026, via Linda Becker) 82% of office coffee respondents reported higher revenue. (Source: Vending Market Watch, SOCI 2026, via Linda Becker)

The same respondents reported raising prices and absorbing costs. Top-line growth is real. So is the pressure on what each location keeps.

Operators Add Formats and Keep the Ones That Work

Smart coolers grew, while vending and micro markets stayed important. (Source: Vending Market Watch, SOVI 2026, via Linda Becker) In coffee, capsule/pod and bean-to-cup placements increased, and traditional glass-pot and thermal equipment still made up about 49% of the installed base. (Source: Vending Market Watch, SOCI 2026, via Linda Becker)

Operators are building a toolkit. Each format earns its place where it fits.

The Format Follows the Location

This is the strategic shift Becker highlights:

  • SOVI presents smart coolers as an option for locations that may not support a traditional micro market. (Source: Vending Market Watch, SOVI 2026, via Linda Becker)
  • Nearly three-quarters of office coffee respondents serve locations with fewer than 250 employees. (Source: Vending Market Watch, SOCI 2026, via Linda Becker)

Put those two findings together and the small site moves to the center of the market. A 120-person office cannot give up a room for a micro market. It can give up a wall for one cabinet. (For a site-by-site comparison, see Smart Cooler vs Micro Market vs Vending Machine [LINK].)

More Sites, Same Team

Back to the gap. 76% of office coffee operators added locations. 47% added staff. SOVI showed growing reliance on technology-enabled formats. (Sources: Vending Market Watch, SOCI 2026 and SOVI 2026, via Linda Becker)

Becker is careful here. The findings point to pressure to serve more locations without equal headcount growth, and she notes they do not prove technology produced labor savings. That is the honest reading, and it is the useful one.

It turns the gap into a planning question. Before you add a site, ask what it will cost your team to keep it running:

  • How often does a route driver need to be there to keep it stocked?
  • Can you see what sold and what is missing before the truck leaves?
  • What happens when the equipment goes down and nobody is on site?
  • How much of the margin will shrinkage take at an unstaffed location?

A location that answers those well is one your current team can carry.

Where a Smart Cooler Fits This Picture

For the small, mixed or 24/7 site, a smart cooler is the format SOVI points to. The cabinet stays locked until a shopper pays, every item is tracked, and stock levels are visible remotely.

SHEKEL’s Innovendi® smart coolers are built for that kind of location:

  • 99% uptime and sub-1% shrinkage, as reported by SHEKEL. (Source: SHEKEL Sales Team Guide)
  • Live in hours. New units go live in hours.
  • One standard, any format. The same recognition standard runs from a single cooler to a full fleet.
  • Start with the cooler you own. The WeightAI™ integration kit adds weight-based product recognition to supported existing coolers. See the integration kit [LINK]

Before You Add the Next Location

Take the four questions above to your next site visit. Match the format to the site, then check that your team can carry it. If you want a second opinion on a specific location, SHEKEL will review it with you. Talk to the SHEKEL team [LINK]

Becker closes her column by noting the industry is getting “harder to define neatly,” and that its potential market is getting much bigger. Operators who plan each site around format and coverage are the ones positioned to serve it.

The next location decides the format. The format decides how far your team can stretch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the top US vending industry trends in 2026?

Vending Market Watch’s 2026 surveys of US operators point to growth through new locations (more than 70% of vending and micro market operators and 76% of office coffee operators added sites in 2025), rising revenue alongside rising costs, operators adding formats such as smart coolers alongside vending and micro markets, and matching the format to each location. (Sources: Vending Market Watch, SOVI 2026 and SOCI 2026, as analyzed by Linda Becker, Oct 8, 2026)

How big is the US convenience services market?

Vending Market Watch’s 2026 State of the Vending and Micro Markets Industry report estimates US convenience services revenue grew 18.3% to $40.04 billion. (Source: Vending Market Watch, SOVI 2026, via Linda Becker)

Why are operators adding locations faster than staff?

In the 2026 office coffee survey, 76% of operators added locations and 47% added staff. (Source: Vending Market Watch, SOCI 2026, via Linda Becker) The data shows pressure to serve more sites without equal headcount growth. It does not show what caused the gap, so each new site is worth planning around visit frequency, remote stock visibility, uptime and loss.

Which format fits a location with fewer than 250 people?

Nearly three-quarters of office coffee operators serve locations with fewer than 250 employees. SOVI presents smart coolers as an option for sites that may not support a traditional micro market, because a smart cooler needs one cabinet of floor space and keeps the stock locked until payment. (Sources: Vending Market Watch, SOCI 2026 and SOVI 2026, via Linda Becker)

Can I turn an existing cooler into a smart cooler?

Often, yes. The WeightAI™ integration kit adds weight-based product recognition to supported existing coolers. Compatibility depends on the model, so confirm yours with the SHEKEL team.
